Anise Hyssop
UTAgastache foeniculum syn. Blue giant hyssop, Fragrant giant hyssop, Liquorice mint An herbaceous perennial in the mint family with fragrant flowers and leaves that reaches 60 - 120 cm high. It has a long blooming period with dense spikes of violet-blue flowers. Anise hyssop was used medicinally by Native Americans for cough and fevers. As a culinary herb the sweet licorice-mint flavoured leaves and flowers can be used for herb tea, in fruit punches and salads. It is an excellent plant for attracting birds, bees and beneficial insects to your garden. The flowers can be used dried in potpourri or flower arrangements as they retain their fragrance and colour. Calendula 'Pacific Beauty'

The large flowers bloom in a mix of warm colours including cream, orange, bright yellow and apricot. It is a hardy annual flower, to 80 cm high. It flowers for a long period during Winter and Spring, particularly if regularly deadheaded. Calendula will tolerate any soil in full sun, although it prefers a moderate to rich loam. It has a long history of use for its medicinal properties and as a yellow dye. The flower petals can be used as a substitute for saffron and may be added to salads. Growing Sunflowers

Very lightly mulch seed rows to prevent soil crusting. Choose a position in full sun, sheltered from strong winds. The soil should be rich, fertile, well drained, with a pH of 6.5 - 7. Lime it if necessary several weeks before sowing. Improve the soil before planting by adding compost. Once in flower remove the spent flowers and young pods to prolong flowering. Pick early in the morning to use as a delightful cut flower. |

UT'Mammoth Choice' is an early-flowering, highly productive, climbing sweetpea. Large, fragrant blooms in shades of lavender, blue, rose pink, salmon pink, white and burgundy are borne on strong stems. A beautiful addition to any flower garden and wonderful as a cut flower. Sweet William 'Tall Mixed'
UTDianthus barbatus syn. Dianthus Sweet William is a traditional cottage garden flower that provides a late spring and early summer display. It is a hardy biennial and easy-to-grow. 'Tall Mixed' has large, 10 cm wide flower heads that come in a harmonious range of colours from white to the palest blush pink, to bright fuchsia pink, to deep red shades of carmine. For the gardener, it adds colour and a sweet, peppery fragrance to the garden over a long flowering period. The dense clusters of flowers are produced on sturdy 45 cm self-supporting stems making it useful as a cut flower with a good vase life. The flowers provide nectar for bees, butterflies and birds. In the kitchen, it can be used as an excellent edible flower adding both beauty and nutrition to a dish, as flavonoids are found in the petals. The petals should be removed from the base of the flower as it can be quite bitter. With a sweet clove-like flavour it will complement creamy desserts and is one of the many ingredients in chartreuse liqueur. Use them to easily add decoration to a cake, garnish salads, soups and cold drinks. The plants prefer a sunny open position in moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Viola 'Johnny Jump Up'
UTViola tricolor Syn. Heartease, Wild Pansy An heirloom little flower that is believed to be the origin of modern pansies. The bright purple, yellow and white blooms are produced in great abundance. A delightful cool season flower for edging or containers. The flowers are edible; decorative, tasty and nutritious. Flowers have a slight wintergreen flavour and are high in vitamin C; leaves in vitamin A. Use the flowers and young leaves in salads. It is suitable for temperate and subtropical areas. Sow late Autumn to early Spring. The best germination soil temperature is between 17 - 20°C. Germination will take 4 - 7 days. Sow seed 3 mm deep in seedling trays for later transplanting. Transplant 15 - 20 cm apart. It is frost resistant but drought tender. Dead-head regularly to prolong flowering. It will generally self-sow the following year. Days to flowering: 60 - 70. Yarrow - Red 'Cerise Queen'
UTAchillea millefolium 'Cerise Queen' is a decorative herb with bright cherry pink umbels with a white centre that flowers for a long period. The mid green ferny leaves are arranged in a rosette . It is a hardy and drought tolerant plant with flowers which are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and beneficial insects. It is useful as a groundcover and as cut flowers, either fresh or dried. Handfuls of yarrow are believed to speed up the decomposition of the compost heap and to add soil nutrients. Red yarrow plants spread to form 60 cm wide clumps. Plants prefer a sunny open position in a well-drained soil but will tolerate light shade.
