Bat Boxes
![]() Micro-bats are voracious predators of mosquitoes, and have been recorded eating up to 500 insects/hour and up to 40% of their body weight every evening. These are a distinctively different bat to the large fruit eating Flying Fox. Installing a Micro-bat box mimics the large tree hollows they would normally occupy and is the most natural way to reduce the spread of dangerous mosquito-borne diseases such as Ross River virus, dengue fever and Japanese encephalitis. These Bat Boxes are pre-assembled and easy to install using the pre-drilled hole through which you can run wire and then feed it through some old garden hose to protect the tree. Hang 3-4 metres from the ground from a tree trunk, over a horizontal limb of a tree, a rafter in a carport, on a pole near a dam, strung between trees or from a bracket attached to the side of a building. Place where it will not be disturbed and so there is a clear flight path under the box as bats often like to fly straight up into the box. These tiny bats live in small family groups and will alternate roosting sites, even daily, across their home range. This will vary with each species (23 different species reside in south-eastern Australia that use hollows). Hanging more than one box is the best option for encouraging these night active insect eaters to clean up your mosquitoes, fruit piercing moth, etc. They are the first nocturnal to emerge at dusk and their flight, wheeling and darting is similar to swallows. Micro-bats eat insects, which are more abundant near water (dams or creeks), so they prefer to roost in boxes that are near water, even though they may fly several kilometres between roosting and feeding sites. |

Mosquito Drops
![]() With just a few drops of this silicon-based liquid, manufactured from very pure quartz sand, you can significantly reduce mosquito breeding on your property. Use in standing water: ponds, water features, bird baths, blocked drains, septic tanks, etc. It works by spreading across and forming a very thin film on the water's surface, suffocating immature mosquito stages and hindering the female from laying new eggs. This purely physical action has no adverse effects on aquatic, soil or sediment dwelling creatures, bees, birds etc. Although it is NOT recommended for drinking water in Australia it is certified for application to drinking water storages in the USA. 45 ml bottle. Application rate: (0.5ml - 1ml per m2 of water surface). Repeat application in 4 weeks. Material Safety Data Sheet PM117 Abstract from International Pest Control Magazine |
