The vibrant purple butterfly-topped flowers bloom for a long period and are held above the foliage. The attractive leaves are grey-green and aromatic. It is an improved form of Lavandula stoechas and does not become weedy. Lavender belongs in every garden for the wide range of uses it provides, from dried or cut flowers, flavourings for desserts or forage for bees. These grow just like normal leeks except each plant produces bulbils at the top of the stem (similar to Tree Onions) that can used to grow new plants. The leeks die back at the end of summer and remain dormant until winter / spring. The full-size leek can be cut at the base rather than pulled and will grow a new plant. It is a fast growing, evergreen shrub, 3 - 5 m tall with cream flowers and red edible fruit. The attractive new leaves have a reddish bronze tinge. It forms a dense plant 2 - 3 m wide but responds well to pruning. It is psyllid resistant so no ugly bumps on the leaves. It does well across most climate zones with the exception of arid and alpine. It is mainly grown for its large tubers although the cooked leaves can be eaten as well. The flavour of mauka root is described as a combination of potato and cabbage. The leaves contain calcium oxalate which is destroyed by cooking. It has a sprawling habit to 1.8 m in diameter and up to 1.2 m high. It dies back during winter in cold areas and will shoot again in spring. In frost-free climates, mauka will not die back and will require pruning. It can be propagated by seed or crown cuttings. ![]() Morus nigra Not to Norfolk Island, NT, SA, TAS or WA This is a true dwarf mulberry that grows to only a quarter the size of normal mulberry, it is easily maintained to around 3 m high. The delicious fruit is medium to large, black and sweet but with a balanced acidity. Its compact size makes it versatile as a fruiting hedge, large container plant, or as a feature plant in a garden or courtyard. It prefers full sun and makes a good shade tree on the western side of the house and is ideal to provide shelter in the chook run. 'Majestic Dwarf' is a low chill cultivar so crops well in QLD. Mulberries are deciduous and tolerant of a wide climate range so will produce from the Northern Territory to as far south as Tasmania. Trees are self-pollinated so only one is needed for a good crop. As a table olive it is known for its excellent quality fruit that can be pickled either green and black or stuffed. The attractive tree has a low, spreading habit and grows to about 5 m. It really is a tropical plant and needs a warm, humid microclimate created, to grow it further south than northern NSW. Even in Maleny on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland it is not really warm enough to grow it outside. It likes a lot of water and will grow as a marginal plant on the edge of a dam or pond. Tree marigold, Mountain marigold, Lemmon's marigold, Mexican bush marigold, Tangerine marigold, Copper Canyon Daisy Passionfruit Marigold is a shrubby perennial with rich, golden yellow flowers blooming from autumn to spring. The leaves have a strong fragrance described as 'fruit salad' or 'passionfruit'. Most people enjoy the scent but there are a few who may dislike it. It is native to North America and used extensively in drier area gardens for its drought tolerance. It is a tough, pest-resistant plant that grows vigorously to 1.5 m high by 2.5 m wide. It prefers a well-drained soil and sunny position and will tolerate light frosts. The leaves and flowers can be dried for pot-pourri and sachets to repel pest insects in the home. Like all Tagetes spp. when growing in the garden the roots will help to repel soil nematodes. When it is pruned the leaves can be spread around the garden as a pest repellent mulch. It is in the tomato family and grows as a small sprawling bush 80 - 100 cm tall. 'Kendall Gold' is an improved selection that produces yellow fruit striped with purple that has a sweet, delicate, mild flavour, similar to a melon. It does best in warm climates but will tolerate light frost. It is suited to fertile, moist soils in full sun although it will grow in partial shade it will be less fruitful. It is easy to strike from cuttings; new bushes should be planted every few years as it bears less with age. The sprawling habit makes it useful as a groundcover but growing it on a trellis protects the fruit from attack by slugs and snails and from rotting from contact with the soil. ![]() Ananas comosus Not to Norfolk Island, NT, SA, TAS or WA Pineapple is a hardy perennial to 1 metre tall, grown commercially from Northern NSW to the tropics but may be successfully grown in a home garden in a warm microclimate further south and west. 'Pure Gold' is a selected cultivar with sweet, juicy, very fragrant golden fruit. It is also less acidic with a smaller core and a higher Vitamin C content than other types. It requires a fertile, well-drained soil with a neutral to mildly acid pH. Pineapple is a tropical plant and will grow best in a warm climate between 16°C to 33°C with regular rainfall. It is good for juicing and eating fresh. Pomegranate trees will grow in most areas of Australia and are appreciated for their ornamental beauty and fruit. The hardy, deciduous small trees are self-pollinated and grow between 4 - 7 m high. It can be planted in an orchard or used as a hedge or espalier.
