A beautiful, perennial waterplant that grows 1 to 1.5 m tall. Large circular leaves are produced on long stems. Flowers are white with pink tips.
Most parts of the lotus are edible; the leaves are used to wrap steamed food, or when young eaten as a green vegetable, the tuberous roots are used in stir-fry, the flower petals are floated in soup or tossed in salads and the seeds are roasted. It needs a long growing season in a warm climate and full sun. In a dam, in a warm climate they are likely to be invasive; container or pond culture is best.

Salad Burnet has a long history for both its edible leaves and its medicinal properties. It is an attractive, clumping perennial with soft, green leaves in a loose rosette. It grows to 40 cm in height before it flowers, while the flower heads can be up to 75 cm tall. As the name suggests, salad burnet is mainly harvested for the young leaves to use in salads or dressings. Older leaves are stripped off the stem once they become tough. It has been described as having a clean, cucumber-like flavour. The leaves can also be added to soup and make a very aromatic herb vinegar. If you don't use the leaves regularly then cut back the whole plant from time to time to encourage tender new growth. Salad burnet prefers a slightly alkaline soil so add a little lime. It will do best in a sunny position but will tolerate some shade and needs plenty of water in hot weather for the leaves to stay tender. It will grow all year around

Saltbush is a native, sprawling evergreen shrub growing 3 x 3 m. 'De Koch' is an improved cultivar with leaves that are more palatable to stock than the original species. The plant is tall and densely branched with grey leaves and inconspicuous flowers. It is suitable for arid areas and is highly drought resistant and salt tolerant. The young, tender leaves are edible and can be used in a range of ways in the kitchen if the plants are grown in good conditions. It is a useful fodder eaten readily by sheep and cattle. In arid, inland areas it can be used as an ornamental fire-retardant hedge around gardens. It prefers a well-drained alkaline clay soil in full sun, it is unlikely to do well in humid regions. It does best in areas with an average annual rainfall between 300 - 600 mm.

Sambung is a bushy perennial plant to 80 cm high with yellowish orange thistle-like flowers, it is a close relative of Okinawa Spinach. It needs regular trimming to make the plant bushy. The leaves are green and fleshy and said to taste like green beans. The young leaves and shoots can be eaten fresh in salads or steamed like spinach. Sambung traditionally has many medicinal uses and is reputed to extend life which is why it is called 'Leaves of the Gods'. It is also a useful forage plant for poultry. It grows well in partial shade in the subtropics and tropics. In temperate areas it would need winter protection.

Sheep sorrel is a perennial creeping herb in the buckwheat family (Polygonaceae) with small lance-shaped leaves. Spikes of tiny, yellow flowers develop into small reddish-brown seeds. The plant reaches a height of 30 cm when in flower. It is popular as a 'wild forage' herb for its zingy sour lemon taste and attractive leaf shape. The leaves, rich in vitamin C, can be added to a salad, sauces and soups. Sheep sorrel, like garden sorrel and rhubarb, are high in oxalic acid and should be avoided by people who are prone to kidney stones. Sheep sorrel can be very weedy and is best planted in a container as it will take over a garden bed. It can also be planted in food forests as a wild harvest.

Strawberries

For the home gardener, being able to harvest bowlfuls of fresh, juicy, organic strawberries early in the morning for breakfast is a great motivator but keep in mind if there are kids involved, very few may actually make it back to the kitchen. Growing your own strawberries is easy to achieve with the right approach.
Strawberries are available as 3 main types and all of them have a place in a food garden:

1. Alpine or Woodland Strawberries are hardy perennials producing small fruit with an intense strawberry flavour. A useful plant for path edging in shady areas. They do not run but the clumps get bigger over time and can be divided.

2. Ever-bearer or Sweetheart strawberry types such as 'Fresca' and 'Ruby Red' are almost runnerless making them easy to maintain and great for containers and hanging baskets. These have the advantage of fruiting after the main crop types have finished, giving you a longer strawberry season.

3. Main Crop Strawberries such as 'Joy' and 'Lowanna' produce a large crop the first year (think bowlfuls of yummy, fresh strawberries) and a smaller crop the second year. After that the strawberry bed should be replanted with young runner plants.

Alpine Strawberries

Alpine strawberries are cultivated versions of the woodland strawberries that have been grown in home gardens since the 12th century. Alpine strawberries can grow in full sun, although in very hot areas, they do better in dappled shade. Like other strawberries, they do best in a rich, fertile, well-drained soil. The plants are hardy and unlike other strawberries, they do not send out runners. Instead they grow as a leafy mound to 30 cm in height. Plants bear fruit the first season after planting. Feed and water regularly and they will continue to fruit for 2 to 4 years, after that they can be rejuvenated by division. Alpine strawberries are best grown in temperate or cooler subtropical areas.

Sweet potatoes are vining plants with attractive lobed leaves, pink morning-glory type flowers and tuberous roots. They are a 'must have' vegetable in warmer climates as they are so easily grown, highly nutritious and can be used in wide range of recipes. The vines are vigorous so space is needed. They do best in areas that are frost-free for at least 5 months with warm days and nights. In cooler areas wait for the beginning of the warm weather to plant. Sweet potato was domesticated in Peru about 8000 years ago and slowly spread through South America. Research published by the National Academy of Sciences has now demonstrated that Polynesians journeyed to South America and brought home kumara, long before Europeans even reached the South Pacific. In New Zealand sweet potato is known as kumara and both the pre-European Maori types and those introduced by Europeans are grown. 'Purple Raven' is a hardy, attractive, colourful plant with vibrant, deep purple, lobed leaves, it is very useful as a groundcover. It grows 20-30 cm high with dense coverage over the ground. It is not an aggressive runner like the cropping sweet potatoes generally are. It is not grown for the tubers but for its usefulness as a groundcover and for its edible leaves and flowers. It only produces a very small harvest of tubers. It can be grown in containers and hanging baskets and will tolerate partial shade. The leaves are a source of purple pigments, called anthocyanins.
