Each plant has prostrate stems that spread to approx 80 cm long. In temperate areas sow March - May or August - October; in subtropical areas sow May - July.

Barrel medic is a winter-vigorous annual legume, low growing and drought hardy; a relative of lucerne. It is a good choice for areas where the rainfall is too low for clovers. It will self-seed every autumn to give winter cover in frost prone areas. It dries up in spring to form a light mulch. It is nutritious and palatable to stock and combines well with pasture grasses. It is useful as an orchard groundcover and its small yellow flowers are attractive to bees and beneficial insects.
