Fava bean is an annual legume adapted to winter rainfall areas. It is a cool season plant, tolerant of frost and wet conditions. The seed is edible, the plant is used for silage and hay or as a green manure. As a green manure it adds a large amount of organic matter to the soil. In temperate areas sow February - June or August - October; in subtropical areas sow March - June.
