Detroit' beetroot is a high yielding, globe-shaped, deep crimson root vegetable with a smooth skin. The attractive dark green leaves with red veins can be used as cooked greens. Beets have an excellent flavour, are very nutritious and can be eaten raw, steamed or made into soup.

Sow when: Germinate best at 10 - 28°C soil temp.

Temperate: Spring, summer, autumn

Subtropical: All year round, avoid very hot weather

Germination: 5 - 10 days

Depth: 12 mm deep; soak seeds in warm water for 1 - 2 hours before planting

Position: Full sun

Sow where: Sow direct into garden bed

Soil type: Fertile, well drained, add compost, pH 6.5 - 7.5; keep well supplied with water and mulch

Harvest: 55 - 65 days, start harvesting when still 'baby beet' size, older roots get woody
