Fenugreek is a legume adapted to winter rainfall areas. It is a cool season plant, tolerant of frost and a wide range of soils. The seed is used as a spice, the plant as a high protein forage crop or as a green manure. It has deep roots, and is excellent for loosening heavy clay soils.

Sow when: Germinate best at 16 - 25°C soil temp

Position: Full sun; direct where it is to grow; cover seed very lightly and firm down

Soil type: Fertile soil with good drainage; pH 6.5 - 7, dislikes acid soils

Harvest as a spice: Allow the seed pods to ripen and turn yellow; then pick and air-dry in a paper sack until pods open

Inoculant: Follow the instructions for the inoculant provided

Green manure: Slash or dig in just as flower buds form, this takes approx 3 months
