Japanese Millet is a fast growing, clumping grass with a min. rainfall requirement of 600 mm p.a. It tolerates soils of low fertility and is useful as a green manure to add bulk organic matter to the soil and to suppress weeds. It combines well with cowpea which adds nitrogen. It is also useful as an animal and poultry forage, providing better quality feed than forage sorghum; it can be grazed 5-6 weeks after sowing. It provides a fast growing cover for erosion control on roadwork edges and dam walls.
