Lupins are legumes adapted to winter rainfall areas. It is a cool season plant, tolerant of low temperatures, frost and sandy, acidic soils. Used as a green manure for soil improvement, the deep taproot will break up compaction and improve structure. In good conditions lupins can fix 130 kg of nitrogen per ha/yr. Another use is providing shelter for a young orchard. Planting lupins between rows of young trees protects them from damaging winds and temperature extremes.
