This heirloom vegetable is an ancestor of the watermelon. The dark green, striped fruit has firm white flesh which is not eaten raw but used to make jams, pickles, pies and candied rind. It has a high pectin content so is often mixed with low pectin fruit for jam making. The fruit has a hard skin and stores well. The vines are extremely productive, drought tolerant and hardy.
