Syn. Green gram, golden gram. Mung bean is a hardy, fast growing, shrubby legume adapted to a wide range of climates. It prefers a rainfall range between 700 mm to 1500 mm. The seed, once harvested, can be eaten as sprouts, or used in soups and stews; the young pods can also eaten. It makes an excellent green manure as it adds nitrogen and builds organic matter; it combines well with buckwheat or Japanese millet. It is a good animal and poultry forage and can be cut for hay.
