This is a non-bulbing onion also known as Bunching Onion or Evergreen Onion. It is a versatile plant with tube-like hollow leaves; it will grow from cold regions right through to hot, tropical areas. It is extremely hardy, tolerates frost and is pest resistant. Welsh onions have a mild, sweet flavour, the red shaft plus a few cm of the green leaves are eaten.
