Wallflowers are a hardy biennial plant to 45 - 50 cm tall producing colourful, sweetly scented flowers, with a long flowering period, mainly in winter. The flowers appear in sunset shades of cream, bright yellow, apricot, purple, pink, vivid red and burgundy colours. Wallflowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and beneficial insects. They make a lovely addition to a flower border, can be used as cut flowers, grown in containers or planted along paths so their fragrance can be appreciated. Plants prefer a sunny open position in moist, well-drained soil. The seeds germinate below 20°C; sow January to April in temperate areas; spring in very cool areas; March to April in subtropical areas. The flowers and seeds are toxic and should never be eaten. Days to bloom: 80 - 100 days.
