A hardy, easily grown perennial pond plant with glossy green leaves, spikes of attractive blue flowers in summer. Seeds are edible, a bit like puffed brown rice. Plant in full sun, in up to 200 mm depth of water.

A low growing, evergreen, tropical herb with pretty pale blue flowers used in Asian and Vietnamese cooking. The fresh stems have a citrusy cumin flavour and are used fresh in soups, curries and as a garnish. It needs a frost-free position in partial shade with moist soil. It will also grow as an edge or bog plant next to a pond. In cooler areas it can be grown in pots and will benefit in winter from being completely covered, pot and all, with a clear plastic bag, tied at the top. Finish by punching a few air holes. This arrangement creates a miniature greenhouse to keep this plant happy through colder periods.

Sacred Lotus 'Paleface' UT

A beautiful, perennial waterplant that grows 1 to 1.5 m tall. Large circular leaves are produced on long stems. Flowers are white with pink tips.
Most parts of the lotus are edible; the leaves are used to wrap steamed food, or when young eaten as a green vegetable, the tuberous roots are used in stir-fry, the flower petals are floated in soup or tossed in salads and the seeds are roasted. It needs a long growing season in a warm climate and full sun. In a dam, in a warm climate they are likely to be invasive; container or pond culture is best.

Water Celery is a perennial bog plant with a strong celery flavour that becomes milder with cooking. It grows to 60 cm when in flower in most areas of Australia. The leaves and tender stems are eaten raw in salads, used in soups, or to flavour rice; the white roots are also edible. It spreads rapidly to form a dense mat and prefers full sun to a partially shaded position. Care should be taken to keep it out of natural watercourses. More info on growing edible waterplants...

Watercress 'Aqua Large Leaf' UT

Watercress is a perennial, hardy aquatic creeper that grows naturally in gently flowing streams, it has small white flowers all summer long. The young shoots and leaves are very nutritious with a spicy, peppery taste. It has proven health properties and is rich in vitamin A, C, calcium, iron and folate as well as isothiocyanates which are cancer-fighting compounds. It is used in salads, soups and sandwiches. Watercress can be grown successfully in ponds in full sun; in very moist, partially shaded sites in the garden; or in a large, self-watering pots placed in the shade. Suitable for all areas.

Waterlily 'Black Princess' UT

'Black Princess' has gorgeous, dark red to almost black flowers that glow against the glossy green leaves. It is a hardy, perennial waterlily with goblet-shaped flowers, 12 to 15 cm across. It is very free flowering. The average spread is 1.2 m but it will grow bigger given the space. Waterlilies are a beautiful addition to any pond, the best results are achieved in full sun with a minimum water depth of 45 cm. No tubestock can be sent to Northern Territory.
